How much fertilizer should I use on my plants?

This is the number 1 question asked of us and the answer is not that easy, since plants are all different and require different fertilizers at different times and at different concentrations. We will try our best to describe the most popular plant food regimen. Most gardeners are growing vegetables or flowers. These both require similar feeding schedules.

Flowers/Vegetables: Most plants will require a feeding 2-4 times a month, depending on growth rate and whether your plants are in a container or in the soil. Container gardens can use up fertilizer fast, and at the same time can build up toxic chemicals if not properly leached occasionally. Choosing the proper NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium) ratio is as important as eating a balanced diet is for us. Plants tend to need a higher nitrogen ratio during vegetative growth and a higher phosphorus and potassium ratio during fruiting or flowering. Supplying the proper ratio can be achieved in a few easy steps.

Method 1 utilizes fertilizers that have been blended in popular ratios for a variety of plants. These are very easy to use as there is no thought really required. Simply purchase a fertilizer with a high N content and lower P and K content, this ratio would be used for vegative growth early in the plants life. Also buy a fertilizer with a lower N content and a higher P and K content, this ratio will be used during fruiting/flowering phase of the plants life. With these two fertilizers in your gardening arsenal you will have a successful easy crop.

Method 2 is the more difficult scenario but can possibly produce larger denser flowers and fruits/vegetables. This method makes it possible to mix different ratios of NPK at will. The fertilizers come separated and you mix what you need. The benefits are obvious, once you have learned about the plants you are growing you will be able to customize the mix for each flower or vegetable.

Many gardeners overlook the fact that as plant grow larger they will need more food. This is accomplished by increasing the concentration of the fertilizer in the water. Most instruction will give you a max and min to use.

BlackJack: This method is by far the simplest yet. A superb organic fertilizer that you can simply mix into your soil and plant your flowers/vegetables in OR use it as a dressing around the top of the plants. The dressing is made by adding the fertilizer to some soil mixing and dressing around the plants. They have two mixes available one for vegative growth and the other for flowering. You can use both at the same time or one then the other. A very convenient way to care for your garden, fertilize once and just keep them watered. Click here to visit our soil fertilizer products.

As with any fertilizer it is of the utmost importance to read and use the instruction on the package. They have tested and used the fertilizers and have come up with what they believe will be safe for most plants. Use there knowledge to help keep you from making any mistakes. When beginning to use a new fertilizer is also a good idea to start with only a few plants to make sure that you get the results you want.

So start producing fresh healthy vegetables for your family using any of our great products. If you need assistance or have any questions about getting your garden going please feel free to email or call us.

Watering
The amount of water for each plant watering can be calculated by the waste water run-off from each pot. It is recommended that the gardener is allowing the pot's soil to go from wet to moist before watering again. An even application of water to the surface is important. At each watering, calculate the waste water run-off from each pot to be approximately 20% of the water applied to the soil. Do not allow waste water run-off to soak back up into the pot's soil.

Leaching/Heavy Watering
It may be a benefit to the plant to leach the soil with heavy watering every three weeks, especially if improper watering applications have occurred and or waste water run-off has been minimal from the pot. An even application of water to the soil surface is important. Calculate the water run-off from each leaching to be 25-50% of the pot's soil capacity. (For every 4-gallon size pot, allow 1-2 gallons of water run-off when leaching/heavy watering.) Should the leaching of the soil be an apparent benefit to the plant, your water techniques may need to be improved. Do not allow waste water run-off to soak back up into the pot's soil. The above stated watering techniques use approximations and are expressed as general rules of thumb. Dried - out soils should be fully hydrated before watering or leaching.

Raised Bed Gardens
Fill the bed with soil to a depth suitable for each plant's root structure. For individual plants, dig a hole In the bed large enough to accommodate the root ball of the full- grown plant and fill it with soil. Then, plant in the soil. Water as necessary for your climate.

Hanging Baskets
Choose a basket to fit the plant. As a general rule of thumb, use 1 1/2 gallons of soil for every 12 inches of plant height. When filling a hanging planter with soil, do not fill it to the brim. Allow at least 1 inch of space for the planter to accept water with out over flowing the rim. Then, plant in the soil.

Indoor Planters
Choose a pot to fit the plant. As general rule of thumb, use 1 1/2 gallons of soil for every 12 inches of plant height. When filling a planter with soil, do not fill it to the brim. Allow at least 1 inch of space for the planter to accept water with our overflowing. Plant in the soil. Never allow the soil to become wet to touch for extended periods of time.

Seeding, Clones, and Cuttings
To root cuttings/ clones, soil may be blended with perlite on a 50/50 ratio. Refer to basic watering techniques for container growing stated earlier. Transplant when roots and size dictate. For seedling's, plant seeds into soil to the seed package's directed depth. Soil may be blended with perlite on a 50' 50 ratio for some seed varieties. Refer to the basic watering techniques for container growing stated earlier/ Transplant when size dictates.
